Young Avengers Special One-Shot (2006)
After the break-up of The Avengers, a group of teen analogs (Iron Lad, Hulkling, Asgardian, and Patriot) begin making headlines. But, just as Captain America and Iron Man are about to shut them down (for their own good), they learn one of the kids is “related” to their greatest enemy.
Who would have ever thought that a series that is essentially “What If Marvel Did The Teen Titans?” could be this good? Post-modern teen super groups might be a dime a dozen, but this one has charms that go way beyond its surface slickness. (But, boy, the art by Jim Cheung sure is pretty.)
The storytelling alternates between intense close-ups, when it’s in soap-opera mode, to wild panoramic shots, when the action starts. And, as you might expect from Alan Heinberg, there’s plenty of crackling dialogue, fanboy moments (J. Jonah Jameson reminiscing about Bucky; The Growing Man popping up as someone’s action figure), and “Whoa, cool!” moments (such as when a very pregnant Jessica Jones slaps Kang the Conqueror).
