Item Description
Introduced in, and appearing initially in three 1972 issues of the tryout title MARVEL PREMIERE, WEREWOLF BY NIGHT almost immediately ascended to having its own title by September of 1972. It told of the tragic adventures of young JACK RUSSELL, who was born into a long lineage of ‘Lycanthropy’ - and shared with his forebears the horror of turning into a Werewolf whenever the moon was full! Here in WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #3, “The Mystery of the Mad Monk!” is featured. Written by co-creators Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, along with artist Mike Ploog, the tale continues the dive into the secrets of the DARKHOLD - the mysterious tome that has a hold on JACK RUSSELL's curse of lycanthropy!
Father Ramón Jóquez is perus the mystic tome when a grey mist begins pouring from the pages, infecting him. He telephones JACK RUSSELL in a panic, but the mist consumes him and ends his life.
Meanwhile, JACK hops into his car and begins racing towards the rectory, but as he’s driving, the full moon rises and JACK transforms into the WEREWOLF. He leaps from his car, sending it careening off the edge of a cliff.
The WEREWOLF instinctively makes his way towards Father Jóquez' rectory, but when he arrives, he finds that Father Jóquez' body has been taken over by the spirit of a 12th century monk named AELFRIC. The monk reveals that in the year 1179 he took possession of the scrolls of Chthon – scrolls that would one day become better known as the DARKHOLD.
AELFRIC summons a bull-headed servant named DRAGONUS to combat the WEREWOLF and charges at him, but JACK ducks out of the way, The monster's body plunges into AELFRIC, goring him with his horns and releasing the monk's soul, ending his threat!
The story bears all the hallmarks of Roy Thomas' fascination with the occult and eldritch (as he so skillfully employed in his CONAN stories) and Mike Ploog's artwork is wonderfully exciting!
This is a great-looking and pretty flawless copy with no faults or blemishes that we can see! Easily an 8.0 VF for a 53-year old comic! The Overstreet Price Guide suggests a price of $35.00. We're going to make this issue a bit more affordable for you WEREWOLF BY NIGHT fans at just $22 . . with our ULTRA-L•O•W shipping!
