Item Description
Here is Donald's 3rd solo outing in the Dell Four Color series, from 1947. As the first 11 years of 'DONALD DUCK' did, this issue features CARL BARKS artwork, with the lead 20-page story introducing BARKS' most enduring - and endearing - character: UNCLE SCROOGE McDUCK!In "Christmas on Bear Mountain", Donald's stingy old Uncle Scrooge (notably scruffier and grumpier and a bit less wealthy than he later became) lets the ducks use his mountain cabin for the Christmas holidays, planning to test Donald's bravery by coming to the cabin disguised as a bear. However, two real bears--a mother and her cub--turn up at the cabin soon after the ducks' arrival and take over. But circumstances ensue that make Scrooge think the ducks are actually fearless in the face of danger! Scrooge retreats unnoticed, changes his opinion of the boys and spends Christmas Dinner in his mansion with his nephews.
You also get three more 1-page stories by Barks, as well as the 12-page MICKEY MOUSE story, "Santa Claus Land", wherein Mickey and Goofy are working at Santa's Workshop at the North Pole. Doc and Grumpy of the Seven Dwarfs and Dumbo are also working there. Goofy is made custodian of Santa's reindeer, where he discovers that Prancer has been stolen by Willie the Giant! Nice lively artwork by Don Gunn.
This is an extremely nice copy for being 74 years old - a strong binding, minimal toning, bright colors and nary a spot of foxing! No tears or pieces missing. A tiny scuffed pencil mark in the upper left corner of the cover brings this otherwise pristine copy down to a 7.5 VF-. If you're looking for a quality copy for your Donald Duck or Carl Barks collection, this is it! Believe it or not, Overstreet values this issue, in this grade, at $950.00!! We've enjoyed it for years and can say goodbye for $880.00 Plus FREE SHIPPING!
