Uncle Creepy Poster
1973 SANJULIAN PAINTED F-VF CONDITION!
Definitely macabre...
COUSIN EERIE'S sidekick UNCLE CREEPY
SIZE ABOUT 19 X 26 INCHES!
Dated: 1973
Classic Warren Poster
Art: Manuel SanJulian
The first announcement of an all-new black and white horror comic book named CREEPY appeared in the December
1964 issue of Famous Monsters, #79. For his very first appearance before the reading public, CREEPY announced that "the
publisher of Famous Monsters - a guy named Jim Warren - is now my prisoner! As you read this he is chained to the walls
of my dungeon, wondering what diabolical plans I have in store for you readers of Famous Monsters and Monster World!
And now, my little fiends, I am coming after You! And who am I? Heh, heh... My name's CREEPY, of course!"
Although CREEPY started out as a quarterly, with the second issue it went bi-monthly due to its encouraging reception at
the newsstands. Each issue featured 5 or 6 stories of suspense, all introduced by the slightly gleeful, definitely macabre
figure of Uncle Creepy.
Eerie: The idea behind the publication of EERIE was to horrify readers with 12 issues of CREEPY
and EERIE a year, instead of just 6 issues of CREEPY. As Creepy explained it, "Ol' chubby can whet your appetites during
the off months until it's time for me to come through with the genuine ghoulish goods."
Ol' chubby referred to Cousin Eerie, who was the host of his own magazine just as Uncle Creepy was.
Best known in the States for his work on the Warren icon, Vampirella, Sanjulian has been rightly called “an artist’s artist” for his brilliant sense of composition and use of color - it’s the kind of thing civilians just enjoy, while fellow illustrators make furious mental notes for future reference. Great painting, great poster
