"The Thing on the Doorstep" is an H.P. Lovecraft horror story about a man, Daniel Upton, who confesses to killing his best friend, Edward Derby, claiming it was self-defense against a supernatural possession. The horror begins after Derby marries the occult-obsessed Asenath Waite, whose father was a sorcerer, leading to Derby's personality changing as he becomes a vessel for Asenath's consciousness, and eventually, her father's. The story culminates in a terrifying climax where Upton confronts a monstrous, decaying figure on his doorstep, which is revealed to be the consciousness of Asenath's father trapped in Derby's body, leading to Upton's desperate act of murder. Simon Birks, the writer of this comic, fails to mention Lovecraft in the indicia or elsewhere in the first issue. Even though the story is in the public domain, a nod would have been respectful to the original work.
