Item Description
Fall 1941 was a boom period for patriotic superheroes as the country prepared to enter World War II. THE FIGHTING YANK first appeared in Nedor Comics' _Startling Comics_ #10 (September 1941), created by prolific writer Richard L. Hughes (who also created SUPERMOUSE!).Bestowed with a magical cloak by the ghost of his Revolutionary War hero ancestor, which gives him superhuman powers, Bruce Carter becomes THE FIGHTING YANK, thwarting the enemies of America, like evil scientist Dr. Mavelli, Nazi Dr. Fantom and his werewolves, and Nitro-Man, who has nitroglycerin in his veins and has exploding punches!
Here in issue #20, from early 1947, the War is over and FIGHTING YANK squares off against cowboys who are mistreating Native Americans, and White oppressors of South Seas Pearl Divers (wherein the shark attack on the cover actually happens!)!! WWII may be finished, but FIGHTING YANK still knows how to pummel the bad guys!
Besides the three FIGHTING YANK stories, there is also a 9-page 'Super Sleuths' tale, and a 4-page Funny Animal outing for Jack Bradbury's 'DUDLEY'!
This copy has definitely seen better days - There is slight warping, the covers are stained, the center spread is detached, and there is a slight odor of mustiness. We'll call it a 3.0 GD/VG, but you might call it something better! This is a great example of how Better/Nedor/Pines tried to maintain the patriotic spirit in its comic books even after WWII had ended. Overstreet values this issue in 3.0 grade at $102, but we'll knock a few dollars off that and ask for $92 . . . plus complimentary FREE shipping!
