The beginning of a complex saga dealing with the Squadron Supreme, Overmind, and the seeming return of Kyle Richmond.

The Defenders gather with their housekeeper, Dolly, and Beast's girlfriend, Vera, for a party to celebrate Val's return to her own body, and for their recent victories in general. After some well-deserved jollity, they turn their minds to some of the Defenders that are still missing.

One of them, Dr. Strange, sends them an astral-form message, saying that there is dire need for them on another plane. He teleports them all to his side, where a few of their other companions, including the presumed-dead Nighthawk, are! They are overjoyed at his apparent resurrection.

Hyperion is there as well, and they realize they are in the Squadron Supreme's dimension. He is sick, but he and Kyle tell them what has been happening on this world:

The Kyle Richmond of Earth-S was elected president (explaining his appearances in the last couple issues). Then Overmind arrived, and the evil alien despot became "friends" with Richmond (really, seemingly controlling his mind). Together they slowly started arresting dissidents and created martial law. America became a state of fear and control.

The Squadron met to decide what to do. However, President Richmond and Overmind appear, admit their nefarious purposes, and defeat the Squadron. Only Hyperion barely escapes. They create a propoganda campaign against him and he goes into hiding to heal. Overmind takes over the rest of the world. Hyperion sent out an interdimensional SOS.

Back in the present, Richmond explains that he was pulled into the Earth-S dimension by a strange force at that time, right before he was killed by the explosion a few issues ago. Strange and some others were brought later. Now, Kyle and Hyperion need all the rest of them to help, because Overmind is planning to take over the universe from a new base on the moon.
