The late VAUGHN BODÉ was a popular, prolific, and influential 'Underground Comic' artist who arose in the late 1960s and was widely known in the 1970s. Celebrated for his character CHEECH WIZARD, and his artwork depicting voluptuous women, BODĒ, to this day, has a huge following among cartoonists and graffiti artists, with his characters remaining a popular subject.

BODÉ first created CHEECH WIZARD while still in his teens, and developed him into a local sensation, creating a weekly comic strip around him for the college newspaper while a student at SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY. His characters and storylines became favorites of a number of the 'mainstream' cartoonists in New York City, and he was soon on his way to contributing to men's magazines, NATIONAL LAMPOON, and eventually his own Underground Comics.

Here are two compilation issues of comics from the 1980s and 90s that showed his fan base were still eagerly seeking out examples of his earlier work (BODÉ passed away in 1975 at the age of 34)

THE COMPLETE CHEECH WIZARD, published by RIP OFF PRESS, spanned four issues that compiled a variety of his CHEECH WIZARD strips, colored stories, and notebook musings. Here in the 36-page issue #3 the pervasive psychedelic humor is evident that made him so popular. The issue also contains a revealing 2-page essay by his friend and acolyte, Larry Todd.

THE COLLECTED PURPLE PICTOGRAPHY, published by EROS COMIX in 1991, and contains the nine t3-page stories BODÉ submitted to the men's magazine SWANK. Titled PURPLE PICTOGRAPHY, the stories - in full color - began appearing in 1971. But the work load became too much for BODÉ, and he asked his good friend BERNI WRIGHTSON to help out.

WRIGHTSON eventually did 5 of the 'PURPLE PICTOGRAPHY' stories from BODÉ's scripts but the subject matter bothered him to the extent that he went back to working full-time on SWAMP THING for DC!

These are two great copies of THE COMPLETE CHEECH WIZARD and THE COLLECTED PURPLE PICTOGRAPHY, with strong bindings, supple pages, glossy covers, no toning, and no tears, creases or pieces missing. We conservatively grade this duo an 8.0 VF.

These are still considered 'Underground Comics' and as such are not listed in the Overstreet Price Guide. But a check of other online comic retail sites indicates you could expect to pay at least $80 for the pair.
