Item Description
The first BLACK KNIGHT (of half-a-dozen subsequent MARVEL characters named THE BLACK KNIGHT) was a heroic medieval knight created by writer Stan Lee and artist Joe Maneely, and who made his first appearance in BLACK KNIGHT #1 , during the Golden Age of Comics, when MARVEL COMICS was previously known as ATLAS COMICS.The original BLACK KNIGHT was SIR PERCY OF SCANDIA, a 6th-century knight who served in the court of KING ARTHUR, and was ARTHUR'S greatest warrior. Recruited by the wizard MERLIN, PERCY adopted a double identity (as do all good comic book heroes!) and pretended to be very incompetent until changing into the persona of the BLACK KNIGHT. As his alter ego, PERCY wields the Ebony Blade, which MERLIN forged from a meteorite.
A constant foe of the evil knight MODRED THE EVIL (ARTHUR's traitorous nephew), PERCY is eventually killed by him during the fall of Camelot when stabbed from behind with an enchanted blade – although MODRED then dies himself of wounds inflicted by ARTHUR. MERLIN ensures that PERCY's spirit will live on by casting a spell that will revive his ghost if MODRED should ever return.
Here in issue #2 of the 5 issues of BLACK KNIGHT published, you get 5 short tales of the BLACK KNIGHT's daring adventures, all illustrated by Golden and Silver Age great Joe Maneely (of whom, Stan Lee once claimed, "If he had lived past his tragic death at the age of 32, he could have been another Jack Kirby - he was that talented!").
This is an exceptionally nice copy of BLACK KNIGHT #2 - a 70-year old comic! It has a strong binding (though there is a looseness of the cover at the bottom staple), glossy covers, supple pages, great color, minimal toning, and no folds or tears. It does have a bent corner and tiny piece missing from the back cover, and there is a date stamp on the front cover. All in all, very worthy of a grade of 5.0 VG/FN.
For this grade, the Overstreet Price Guide assigns a value of $610.00! We scoff at that exorbitant pricing, and offer this Golden Age gem to you for just $300 !! And we'll throw in FREE SHIPPING!
This was one of Roy Thomas' favorite comics when he was a teen, and now you can enjoy Maneely's great artwork too!
