TALES TO ASTONISH was originally the name, in 1959, of MARVEL'S anthology comic book of Science Fiction stories, showcasing the art work of - among others - JACK KIRBY and STEVE DITKO.

But here is an issue of the second series to carry that name - TALES TO ASTONISH Vol. 2 - reprinting stories of the undersea ruler the SUB-MARINER, which ran for 14 issues from December 1979 to January 1981.

Here is the fifth issue of that second series, reprinting the original story featured in SUB-MARINER #5 from the summer of the tumultuous year of 1968.

As told by Roy Thomas in "Watch Out for...Tiger Shark!", and illustrated powerfully by John Buscema, NAMOR stumbles into a bizarre experiment to restore the aquatic talents of injured Olympic swimmer Todd Arliss, and becomes part of the experiment. Dr. Dorcas taps into NAMOR’S natural powers and those of sharks to change Arliss into TIGER SHARK, whom NAMOR battles. Despite being defeated, TIGER SHARK is able to take LADY DORMA prisoner!

This is a well-preserved copy of TALES TO ASTONISH #5 with a strong binding and minimal toning of its 44-year old pages There are very minor faults with the cover: rough edges, along with very small, almost unnoticeable dimples and stress lines. It still has great eye-appeal and that leads us to grading this a 7.5 VF-. The Overstreet Guide feels $5 is appropriate -- we feel $3 plus our L•O•W shipping is even MORE appropriate!
