Item Description
The original SUPERBOY comic book featured a teenage incarnation of the MAN OF STEEL and his adventures in the quintessential 1940s American town of Smallville. It began publication in March of 1949, four years after the character's debut in MORE FUN COMICS #101 (January 1945). Monthly publication followed for 28 years, until September of 1977, when it became "SUPERBOY AND THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES"Three years later, with issue #259 (Jan. 1980), the title was changed to LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES , and the BOY OF STEEL left both the team and the book, making return appearances sporadically. For most of its run it was DC's second most popular seller, behind only SUPERMAN - it was my favorite comic book from the ages of 9 to 11!
Here in this 52-pg issue #20 from 1952, you get three SUPERBOY stories from scribes Bill Finger and Gardner Fox, with great art by Curt Swan and John Sikela. The cover story - "The Ghost Who Haunted Smallville" - concerns two entrepreneurs who come to Smallville with a device that appears to materialize the ghosts of dead persons -- including that of JOR-EL, who exposes the fact that CLARK KENT IS SUPERBOY! This has been researched and acknowledged as the first time SUPERBOY becomes aware that he is from an alien planet!!
This is a pretty nice 73-year old Golden Age SUPERBOY -- it is obvious it has been read and enjoyed over the years, but there are no glaring flaws. There is a general worn feeling to the copy, with some faint creases and dents to the covers, a date stamp at the top of the back cover, and a medium spine roll, but no tears or missing pieces. The interior pagers are unblemished.
We conservatively grade this copy a 4.0 VG. . . which The Overstreet Price Guide values at $136! . . . but we're pricing it at just $120 -- it's the most affordable SUPERBOY #20 on HipComic, by far!
