Item Description
STRANGE ADVENTURES ran for 244 issues starting in the Summer of 1950, and was DC Comics' first science fiction anthology title. It began with an adaptation of the 1950 George Pal film DESTINATION MOON. The sales success of the gorilla cover-featured story in this very issue - STRANGE ADVENTURES #8 (May 1951) - led DC to produce a plethora of comic book covers well into the late 1960s with depictions of gorillas in menacing roles - because they sold well!.This big 52-page issue features four major well-written and nicely-illustrated stories, by such Golden Age luminaries as Gardner Fox, John Broome, Gil Kane, Alex Toth and Jim Mooney!
The cover story, "Evolution Plus!", features the art of Bob Oksner, and tells of a scientist who invents a machine that can evolve animal subjects,. But he is accidentally killed by hoodlum Johnny Farrel, who uses the machine on himself, and finding himself devolved into a gorilla's form. He tries to convince authorities that he is Gain but he slowly loses his mind and becomes a gorilla in thought as well as form!
Also herein are "Time Capsule from the Future!" as Earth fends off an alien invasion from Venus, "Revolt of the Humans!" which tells of humanity's battle against controlling robots, and "The Great Rocket Hoax!" - illustrated by Gil Kane, about an adventurer who travels to Venus, but no one believes him.
You also get 6 fun,1-page gags by DC's stable of cartoonists, and great ads for bikes, candy and Daisy Air Rifles!
This copy is nicely tight and well-cared-for, and is in pretty incredible shape for a 74 year-old comic! The binding is strong, the printing is excellently in register, and all the artwork is wonderfully done!
Unfortunately, there is a wrinkle/crease diagonally across the front cover, discoloring at the bottom of the back cover, staining on interior pasges around the lower staple, and off-register miscutting at the top of the front cover.
We grade it conservatively a 4.5 VG+. This condition - for this issue - lists for $120 in the Overstreet Price Guide. We think $95 is more like it, coupled with our L•O•W shipping fees!
And any other purchases on this order add NOTHING to your shipping cost!
