SHOWCASE was a DC "try-out" book that enabled creators to test the waters with new characters and concepts. Many of these characters later went on to star in their own titles, but still many others were left behind. SHOWCASE introduced characters and teams such as 'Atom', 'Flash', 'Green Lantern' and the 'Metal Men'.  And here in issue #80, they tried something a little different: bringing back a character that hadn't been seen in DC comic books for 17 years!

The PHANTOM STRANGER first appeared in an eponymous six-issue anthology series published in 1952 and created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino. After this appearance in SHOWCASE#80, he received another series beginning in May that lasted seven years!

Here in his SHOWCASE reintroduction, beyond the cover by Neal Adams, the STRANGER appears in "The Three Signs of Evil", by his original creators, a story that originally appeared in 1952's Phantom Stranger #4.  

You also get DOCTOR THIRTEEN the GHOSTBREAKER ( Phantom Stranger's persistent adversary) in "I Talked With the Dead!", illustrated by Leonard Starr, which originally appeared in STAR-SOANGLED COMICS #122 from 1951!

Response was good, and three months later THE PHANTOM STRANGER comic debuted and continued for 41 issues.

This is a pretty good-looking 43-year old Silver Age SHOWCASE -- with a glossy cover and supple pages. The binding is strong, There is a very small piece out of the top of the front cover and an almost unnoticeable date stamp.   We grade this a conservative 5.0 VG/FN . . . which Overstreet values at $38 . . . but we're pricing it at only $22 . . with our always-L•O•W shipping!
