Item Description
THE SPECTRE was created by the legendary co-creator of SUPERMAN, JERRY SIEGEL, and first appeared in MORE FUN COMICS #52 (Feb. 1940). When hard-boiled cop Jim Corrigan, on his way with his fiancée Clarice to their engagement party, was murdered by thugs, he was stuffed into a barrel filled with cement and then throw it into a body of water. His spirit was refused entry into the afterlife however, and he was sent back to Earth by an entity referred to only as "The Voice" to eliminate evil. He was portrayed as an all-powerful Spirit of Vengeance, exacting horrible payment for those who practiced evil.In 1966 he was been revived by DC and appeared in 3 issues of SHOWCASE before being awarded his own title. Here is his 3rd Silver Age appearance, from 1966, in the pages of DC's 'auditioning' title SHOWCASE, with story by Gardner Fox and energetic art by Murphy Anderson! This is the start of the story "The Ghost of Ace Chance!", which continues in the first issue of The SPECTRE the very next month.
Here, Gardner Fox spins the tale of the ghost of gambler Ace Chance, who takes over the body of Jim Corrigan, stranding the SPECTRE without a host. Thank goodness the guy in green and white prevails!
This is a nearly pristine copy of this 55-year old comic, with a strong binding, minimal toning, and good color. No tears, creases or pieces missing. We are conservatively grading this an 8.0 VF. . . which The Overstreet Price Guide pegs at $82 . . but we are so relieved that THE SPECTRE got out of this predicament that we're shaving this down to $60. . . with our always-L•O•W shipping of just $2!
