Surprisingly, then, Resurrection Man looks as if it might buck that trend, and rightly so.Mitch Shelley wakes up from being dead with no memory of his past but with a strange super-power. As the series progresses, Mitch finds out who he was and how he came to be dead and why, now, he’s incapable of staying dead (#1–12). Along the way he picks up some friends and some chilling enemies, his wife and best friend included, and every time Mitch is killed he revives with a different super-power. There’s a gruesome guest appearance from Hitman in #10, who has to keep killing Mitch until he awakes with a useful ability. The uncertainty of this last aspect of the strip is what keeps it fresh.As written by Andy Lanning and Dan Abnett, Mitch is not original (there’s a similar character in the Wildcards novels), but the stories are well scripted with a healthy mixture of mystery, super-heroics, and horror. The scratchy, noirish artwork by Butch Guice creates an atmosphere that well suits the writing.
