In September 2011, THE NEW 52 company-wide revamp rebooted DC's continuity, and in this new timeline, the RED LANTERN backstory, was explained and expanded in the RED LANTERNS series written by Peter Milligan and initially illustrated by Ed Benes.

The vengeful former LANTERN, ATROCITUS, is the central character of this new series, after playing an important role in DC's wide-ranging 'In Darkest Night' epic. He is consumed by rage, and forms a league of damaged, and nearly feral Lanterns, with the goal of ending the life of SINESTRO.  They get their powers from the only RED POWER BATTERY - one of the five color-spectrum power batteries of the universe.

Through these beautifully-illustrated first 5 issues, ATROCITUS takes angry command, then appoints 'deputies' to carry out his orders, while secretly hiding the fact that his rage is diminishing.  You really have to read the comics to get the full impact of this action-packed - but still psychologically driven - series!
