'At one time the Punisher had three on-going monthly titles, The Punisher, The Punisher War Journal and The Punisher War Zone, as well as myriad specials and crossovers. The character was practically a sub-imprint. But over-exposure eventually accomplished what the mob could not and the Punisher was gone. After a strange attempt to revitalize the vigilante via a quasi-religious direction [The Punisher (4th Series)], failed in 1999, Marvel called upon Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon of Preacher fame to breathe new life into the Punisher franchise.Utilizing the amalgam of brutal violence and absurd characters often found in Preacher, Ennis took a back-to-basics approach. Frank Castle is a lone, fierce killing machine with a price on his head from Mafia queen, Ma Gnucci, whose encounters with the Punisher mirror those of Herr Starr in Preacher. Additionally three Punisher admirers attempt to emulate him. Payback, a blue-collar killer whose targets are big business types; Elite, an upper class snob who kills those who would lower his property values, and The Holy, a priest who absolves the sinners who confess to him with a very extreme penance.
