Item Description
Colonel NICHOLAS JOSEPH "NICK" FURY, created by Jack Kirby and writer Stan Lee, first appeared in SGT> FURY and HIS HOWLING COMMANDOS #1 (May 1963), a World War II combat series that portrayed the cigar-chomping man as leader of an elite U.S. Army unit. The modern-day character, initially a CIA agent, debuted a few months later in Fantastic Four #21 (Dec. 1963). In STRANGE TALES #135 (Aug. 1965), the character was transformed into a James Bond-like spy and leading agent of the fictional espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D.. From 1968, here is the second issue of the secret agent's exploits in his own title!Acclaimed visionary artist JIM STERANKO not only wrote and pencilled NICK FURY, AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D. #2, but COLORED it as well! In "So Shall Ye Reap . . Death!", Steranko gives us a wild ride as FURY and Jimmy Woo, traveling off the pacific Coast to a rendezvous with the Heli-Carrier, are knocked out of the sky and wind up on a volcanic island transformed into a Garden of Eden and biological laboratory by Centurius, a scientist who disappeared in the 1930s when his theories were scoffed at. After creating both new and extinct forms of life and sending them into space, Centurius plans to rain down fire on the Earth for forty days and forty nights, cleansing it and starting the world anew. With the help of a visiting movie company and their robot gorilla prop, Fury and Woo put the kibosh on his plans.
This copy is great-looking and solid in every way -- a strong binding, supple pages, minimal toning, and great color for a 53-year-old comic! We're very conservatively grading it at 7.5 VF- . Overstreet says $45 for a 7.5 copy . . . but we're pricing it at just $15 . . with our always-L•O•W shipping . . . making it the most affordable copy of NICK FURY, AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D. #2 here on HipComic!!
