JACK KIRBY's arrival at DC was the biggest comics news of 1970-71! I remember the excitement and speculation about just what he would do with the established DC characters . . . or new ones born of his limitless imagination! Here are his 4th and 5th issues of THE NEW GODS, continuing his amazing 'FOURTH WORLD' magnum opus in the first two re-formatted 25¢ 52-page issues!

The New Gods were natives of the twin planets of New Genesis and Apokolips. New Genesis was an idyllic planet filled with unspoiled forests, mountains, and rivers that is ruled by the benevolent Highfather, while Apokolips is a nightmarish, polluted, and ruined dystopia filled with machinery and fire pits that is ruled by the tyrannical Darkseid.

In the story "O'Ryan Gang and the Deep Six!", dreamed-up, written and illustrated by Kirby, ORION stars, and stops Inter-Gang and their "Jammer " and destroys a giant mutant sea creature trying to eat him! Also included are two Golden Age Kirby stories - "Manhunter and the Secret of the Buzzard's Revenge" and "Coast Guard Reconnaissance", both from 1942!

battles Slig and the Deep Six. Kalibak arrives on Earth looking for Orion. There's another "Kirby Classic" included: "Scavenger Hunt", another MANHUNTER tale from 1942, as well as bonus pages - one of which is a self-portrait by Kirby himself!

Thiese are two good copies from Kirby's 'Fourth World' saga. The bindings are strong, the pages are supple and bright, but there are minor chips from the covers, some banged up corners, and #5 has a date stamp on the cover - still terrific parts of any Kirby collection!
