Item Description
The 'Lunar Spectre, MOON KNIGHT, made his first appearance in WEREWOLF BY KNIGHT #32 (1975) as an assassin hired to kill Jack Russell. But over the course of the 2-issue story arc, he realized he was targeting a man who suffered with his condition, and thereafter became a force for good, driven by revenge against those who pursued evil.It took 5 years and a number of 'Guest Appearances' in other MARVEL comics, but he finally got his own title in 1980. Here are the first two issues of MOON KNIGHT vol1, scripted by the character's creator Doug Moench, and illustrated by newcomer Bill Sienkiewicz. MOON KNIGHT had a convoluted, and occasionally changing, origin story, but the initial background and explanation of the character as the alter ego of mercenary Mark Spector (but also occasionally suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder), is presented here in issue #1.
In "The Macabre Moon Knight!", the story begins in the Sudan desert, and shows the conflict that would drive an ongoing hatred for his arch-enemy, BUSHMAN. Spector meets his future girlfriend, Marlene, and explains his situation, including the influence over his life of Khonshu, the Egyptian god of the moon! The story then shifts forward, to New York City in the present, and Spector dons his MOON KNIGHT uniform and continues his vendetta against BUSHMAN.
Issue #2 continues the story in "The Slasher!". When a new criminal, who needs to face justice, arises, MOON KNIGHT is distracted from his quest to find BUSHMAN, and enlists the aid of his 'crew' to help track down the slasher operating on NYC's mean streets.
Tense storytelling by Moench, and terrific art by Sienkiewicz in the 'Neal Adams vein'.
These are clean and solid copies of MOON KNIGHT #1 and #2 with a good firm bindings, and supple pages. The 43-year-old pages show very little toning. Colors are good, and there is gloss sheen on the covers. No creases, tears, or pieces missing. We're calling them an aggregate 8.0 VF, for which Overstreet states a value of $44. How does the Benny's Comics Corner price tag of $32 sound?? Pretty good? And we'll even throw in possibly the lowest shipping charges here on HipComic!
Take a pair of classic comics home . . . but beware the moon!
