Here's a glimpse back to the early 1970s and the early days of Marvel's best-known 'Tryout Title': MARVEL SPOTLIGHT!

In the Fall of 1971 Stan Lee and Roy Thomas both thought it would be great to re-introduce a Western comic into their line-up, but they needed an inexpensive way to test fan reaction and the viability of an ongoing title. They dreamed up MARVEL SPOTLIGHT, and kicked it off with the mysterious Old West hero, RED WOLF. Soon after, Roy Thomas shifted into a higher gear and presented WEREWOLF BY NIGHT, with the able assistance of new and exciting artist Mike Ploog and writer Gerry Conway!

After WEREWOLF got its own title, next up on the tryout spot was GHOST RIDER - another creation of Thomas and Ploog's , and eventually, the longest running series that was birthed in MARVEL SPOTLIGHT. 

Johnny Blaze/GHOST RIDER makes his fourth appearance here in "The Hordes of Hell!", written by Gary Friedrich and -in his last gig on GHOST RIDER - Mike Ploog (with inks by Jim Mooney).  The story starts in Hell, with GHOST RIDER battling the kidnapper of his girlfriend, but surviving a demonic snake and Satan's power, to free Roxanne and return to our own dimension! 

There, Johnny Blaze and Rixanne learn they must travel with the circus troupe to Arizona, where Johnny has been signed to jump Copperhead Canyon on his bike.  He tangles with the local Indian Chief who doesn't want him violating the sanctity of the canyon, and who calls on his Medicine Man/Witch Doctor SNKE DANCE to stop Johnny. 

While he is distracted in battle, GHOST RIDER's motorcycle is sabotaged by the Chief.  When GHOST RIDER is forced to flee SNAKE DANCE - who transforms into a giant snake - GHOST RIDER jumps over the canyon, causing his motorcycle to explode, and sending him falling into the canyon instead!

Great artwork by Mike Ploog from early in his career!  After 6 appearances here in MARVEL SPOTLIGHT, GHOST RIDER got his own title in September 1973, and continued through issue #81 in June 1983.

This is a solid 50-year old copy with a strong binding, supple pages and bright color - with very little toning.  This can easily be graded at 8.0 VF . .  for which Overstreet suggests a price of $57.  We say just $44 . . and combined with our L•O•W shipping, it's a heck of a deal!!  - the most affordable 8.0 VF copy here on HipComic!
