Here's a glimpse back to the early 1970s and the first few months of Marvel's best-known 'Tryout Title': MARVEL SPOTLIGHT!

In the Fall of 1971 Stan Lee and Roy Thomas both thought it would be great to re-introduce a Western comic into their line-up, but they needed an inexpensive way to test fan reaction and the viability of an ongoing title. They dreamed up MARVEL SPOTLIGHT, and kicked it off with the mysterious Old West hero, RED WOLF. Soon after, Roy Thomas shifted into a higher gear and presented WEREWOLF BY NIGHT, with the able assistance of new and exciting artist Mike Ploog and writer Gerry Conway!

After WEREWOLF BY NIGHT got its own title, next up on the tryout spot was GHOST RIDER - another creation of Thomas and Ploog's , and eventually, the longest running series that was birthed at MARVEL SPOTLIGHT. 

Johnny Blaze/GHOST RIDER makes his debut here in a story written by Mike Friedrich. To save the life of his mentor and the man who had become like a father to him, Johnny Blaze makes a deal with the Devil himself, and is transformed into the spirit of vengeance, GHOST RIDER.

After 6 appearances here in MARVEL SPOTLIGHT, GHOST RIDER got his own title in September 1973 and continued to issue #81 in June 1983.

This is a solid 53-year old copy of MARVEL SPOTLIGHT #5, with a strong binding, supple pages and bright color - with very little toning.  The only fault we see is a easy-to-miss date stamp on the back cover.   That keeps us from grading this an 8.5 or even 9.0 .  . so we'll very conservatively grade it an 8.0 VF . .  for which The Overstreet Price Guide suggests a price of $2550.00!!! We'll risk the GHOST RIDER's displeasure and offer it for just $1650.00!  And we'll throw in FREE SHIPPING to sweeten the deal!!
