Marvel Premiere was an anthology series that in concept it was a tryout book, intended to determine if a character or concept could attract enough readers to justify launching their own series, though in its later years it was also often used as a dumping ground for stories which could not be published elsewhere. It ran for 61 issues from April 1972 to August 1981. Here is that very first issue.

Roy Thomas and Gil Kane presented 'The Power of WARLOCK' as the first character tryout in this new series, which followed on the heels of Marvel Spotlight (another 'tryout' anthology). In "And Men Shall Call Him WARLOCK", the story starts on an asteroid drifting through space which is actually the High Evolutionary's ship. The High Evolutionary is recording his memoirs and speaks of Project Alpha and his mistakes. The High Evolutionary thinks of the time when he created the Man-Beast and when he employed the Hulk to destroy his New-Men. He remembers how he became the Ultimate and how it drove him to the brink of madness.

However, his train of thought is broken when he is alerted that an unidentified object is floating outside the ship. It is brought inside and a telepathic conversation ensues with the being inside its 'cocoon'. The High Evolutionary throws a rock from Earth into the sun in an attempt to 'clone' a perfect new world, populated by perfect men.

Man-Beast then attacks the High Evolutionary's ship and revives the killer instinct in man with no-one to stop him. Counter-Earth then follows the same sordid history as Earth and Man-Beast is satisfied . . . but is attacked and all his henchmen are killed. The being inside the cocoon emerges and pledges to end Man-Beast's existence and allow the Earth to be redeemed.  He travels down to the planet - with the SOUL GEM on his brow - and is given a name: WARLOCK.

Roy Thomas creates a quasi-religious saga, and Gil Kane adeptly delineates the Beast-Men and the other imaginative characters! Cameo appearances by THOR and The HULK!

This copy of MARVEL PREMIERE is in terrific shape, with glossy cover, a strong binding, only lightly toned pages, and no tears, splits, or pieces missing.  We're conservatively grading it an 8.0 VF . . . which Overstreet values at $96.  We're offering it for just $82 . . plus our L•O•W shipping!!
