MARVEL CHILLERS was an anthology series created in 1975 to take advantage of the CONAN/OCCULT/WEREWOLF by NIGHT genre so popular at the time. It ran for just 7 issues, until 1976.

Here are the first two issues of MARVEL CHILLERS, devoted to the origin story of MODRED the MYSTIC, an ancient sorcerer from the Sixth Century, alive during the time of King Arthur, he was an acolyte of MERLIN, the Wizard. But he rebelled against MERLIN's beneficent teachings and pursued the Dark Arts. He attempted to obtain the DARKHOLD - a collection of iron-bound scrolls containing the collected magical knowledge of the Elder God-turned demon, CHTHON, the first practitioner of dark magics.

MODRED, in his zeal, earned the fury of CHTHON and was imprisoned, lifelessly, for millennia in suspended animation, but was resurrected in the 20th century, discovered by two archaeologists in tunnels beneath present-day London.

Created by Marv Wolfman, MODRED's adventures in these first two issues of MARVEL CHILLERS were written by Bill Mantlo (The MICRONAUTS) and illustrated by artists Gil Kane, John Romita, Ed Hannigan, Sonny Trinidad and Yong Montaño. These are the only 2 MARVEL CHILLERS issues to feature MODRED, but his adventures continued, and he made appearances in issues of Marvel's AVENGERS, SPIDER-WOMAN, DOCTOR STRANGE, CAPTAIN AMERICA, and others
