Possibly DC's most tormented and anguished anti-hero, MAN-BAT, is unjustly accused of murder and must flee the authorities while still trying to connect with his wife, in this creepy three-part mini-series from 1996.

Chuck Dixon spins the tale, starting with "Gotham Skies", of an increasingly feral Kirk Langstrom/MAN-BAT haunting the Gotham nights, longing for his wife Francine. Meanwhile, murders are committed, seemingly by a 'flying man', and Billy Pettit of the tactical squad sets out in pursuit. After an encounter with Francine where it becomes obvious that she is scared of him, MAN-BAT flies away in distress, into Pettit's sights.

Continuing with "Dark of the Moon", Pettit manages to clip MAN-BAT with a bullet and Langstrom crashes down into the sewers where he is discovered and cared for by KILLER CROC. Meanwhile, the police pay a visit to Francine Langstrom, because they conjecture that someone is killing off all the members of the HELIX group, a genetics research organization which she and her husband quit, due to ethical disagreements with the research planned. They fear she could be a potential victim. When MAN-BAT recovers his strength, he heads back out into the night with CROC's best wishes.

In "The Deadly Sky", Francine Langstrom fears that her husband may be behind the murders of the various members of the HELIX project, but she and colleague David Felcher are soon attacked by the real culprit, STEELJACKET, a creation of the project. The confrontation draws the attention of both MAN-BAT and Billy Pettit, and the threat of STEELJACKET is ended. ••• Francine then goes to visit her son, Aaron, who was born as a man-bat!!
