Here's the scion of Asgard, the MIGHTY THOR, appearing just a year after his debut in this science fiction/fantasy anthology comic, JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY, and just two years before the God of Thunder got his own self-titled comic, with THOR #126 (continuing the JiM numbering).

It's the first appearance of THOR's continuing nemesis, MR. HYDE!

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #99 affords DON HECK the opportunity to fully illustrate the 13-page lead story, rather than just be JACK KIRBY's inker, as he had been for several preceding issues.  

In "The Mysterious Mister Hyde"  we find that Calvin Zabo, a brilliant but amoral hormone scientist, has been refused a job by DR. DON BLAKE. In anger, he becomes MISTER HYDE and attacks the doctor. Meanwhile, ODIN has agreed to let THOR marry JANE FOSTER if she proves worthy.

After MISTER HYDE learns that BLAKE survived a ten story fall ('saved' by THOR), it seems that THOR robs a bank, and the police issue a warrant for his arrest. This is the first time a JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY story was continued into the next issue!

There is also a 2-page text story as well as a story illustrated by STAN LEE's brother called "Stroom's Strange Solution", wherein an alien world is dangerously overpopulated, so a scientist releases a gas that shrinks the entire population, making the same amount of space accommodate more people!

JACK KIRBY does show up, in the comic he co-created, to illustrate "Surtur the Fire Demon!", a TALES OF ASGARD story. SURTUR travels to Earth to destroy it, but ODIN defeats him and traps him in the center of the planet. Their battle creates the moon and starts the rotation of the Earth!

This 62-year old copy of JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #99 is in pretty nice condition - no tears, bent corners, pieces missing or excessive toning. The binding is strong, the pages are supple, and the colors are bright. We'll call this a 6.0 FN which Overstreet values at $126 -- we, however, are going to make this issue a bargain for THORists at just $86!
