HIGHLIGHTS: Beginning in the early 80's, efforts were made to "freshen up" the JLA. Gerry Conway used the X-Men/Titans formula, keeping a few old characters and introducing four young and ethnically more diverse heroes. After the Crisis on Infinite Earths, another revamp left the "big seven" mostly off the table. Superman was too busy to be on a team, Wonder Woman was new to the recreated Earth, the Flash's mantle was just picked up by sidekick Wally West. For ten years, the JLI franchise spotlighted a number of lesser-known characters. Although Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter would be on the various teams at times, they were never together.
Morrison took the job of revamping the JLA after the long run of JLI finally ended, with the stipulation that he could have the big seven. He got them, although some things had changed -- Kyle Rayner was now GL and Wally West still the Flash. Also, in an era were things in comics happened event-sized and more and more often, change was always on the horizon for each individual character.
Morrison's revamp was a huge hit, pitting the "old new" team against a secret Martian invasion. Fans wondered how the modern Batman, focused on street-level crime and his odd rogues gallery, would fare against the world-class threats Morrison promised. In a few issues, he managed to singlehandedly take out three aliens with the powers of Superman and to unravel the secret that would spell the doom of the invaders. "He's just a man!" they shouted, to which Superman responded yes, "the most dangerous man alive!"
This first arc (not included here) set the tone for the new series. Porter gave his best work, juggling fast paced stories and a cast that grew larger and larger. Morrison also impressively hurdled editorial obstacles -- managing a Superman with 100% new powers, a dead Wonder Woman, soon replaced by her mother, and most amazingly a mandatory Genesis crossover in the middle of his already very intricate Rock of Ages Epic featuing Luthor & Joker's Injustice Gang!
While most of the threats were renewed versions of old foes -- Starro, the Key, the White Martians, Professor Ivo -- Morrison also introduced some new ones with longevity. Prometheus, the "anti-Batman", shocked readers by taking down the one character Morrison made seem invincible. And during the DC One Million epic (not included here) we got Solaris, the living sun!
One of the most popular contributions Morrison made to the League was the induction of Plastic Man. His bizarre humor gave just the right touch of levity to an otherwise very serious read. Future writers kept him in the line-up.
Lastly on Morrison, you can really appreciate how he manages, in the midst of these world-shaking fast paced adventures, to distill the dialogue down to just what you need to understand the characters. Small reactions and short exchanges point to volumes of adventures and interactions the characters have shared, that we can only guess at. There is more I could say about his run on JLA, but you might as well just read it.
Most of Morrison's run is covered in this lot, but only parts of Mark Waid & Joe Kelly, who followed. Waid delivered powerful stories, digging more into the characters, but retaining the high-level threats. For the first time, the JLA was pitted against Ra's al Ghul!
Joe Kelly (fresh from Action Comics) and Doug Manhke retained the line-up, but introduced a new JLA while the originals went back in time to find Aquaman (who had apparently died in the Our Worlds at War event) in the long Obsidian Age storyline.
As for the other arcs, Austen's Pain of the Gods is a psychological appraisal of the League, Busiek's arc is a long epic featuring the Crime Syndicate, Johns addresses the aftermath of Identity Crisis, and Harras looks at the fallout of a disbanded JLA and a destroyed Watchtower, as Infinite Crisis rages.
So, a lot of great reading!
