Item Description
BONANZA was a hugely popular Western television series that ran on NBC from September 12, 1959, to January 16, 1973. Lasting 14 seasons and 431 episodes, BONANZA was the second-longest-running Western series on network television (behind only CBS's Gunsmoke), and one of the longest-running, live-action American series ever. BONANZA was set in the 1860s and centered on the wealthy CARTWRIGHT family, who live in the vicinity bordering Lake Tahoe. The series initially starred Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker and Michael Landon - all of whom are pictured on the cover of DELL FOIUR-COLOR #1221.Hitting the newsstands in September 1961, 2 years after its debut on NBC, and at the start of its unprecedented 10-year run as 'America's Highest Rated TV Show', this issue presents two stories of the Cartwright clan, written by Dell stalwart Gaylord DuBois, and nicely illustrated (likenesses and all) by Tom Gill. Inside the front cover you get a photo of the cast, and two-panel previews of the issue's stories.
In "The Snow Walkers", Eight Army deserters steal horses from the Cartwrights and murder their hired hand, a Paiute Indian. The Cartwrights and a good friend track the thieves on skis in order to retrieve the horses and prevent Indian revenge attacks.
You also get the two page min-story "Little Joe's Secret" and a black and white one pager inside the back cover, "Snowshoe Thompson".
And in "Rapiers at Paiute Creek", an Austrian Baron brings his cattle herd to the Ponderosa Ranch area. Neighboring ranchers fear the herd may be carrying Texas Tick Fever and want to destroy it. Little Joe takes to fencing with the Baron, and falls for his daughter . . to unfortunate results!
This copy of BONANZA is in great shape for its age of 65 years, with a strong binding, semi-glossy cover, good interior color, and no foxing, rough edges, or tears, creases, or pieces missing. We're conservatively calling it an 8.0 VF - probably the nicest one you'll see - for which the Overstreet Price Guide assigns a value of $100.00!
But we here at BENNY'S COMICS CORNER remember this show fondly and want to make it affordably available to other collectors who may have cleared their schedules 60-some years ago to plop down in front of this Sunday night show! Make it yours for just $70. It's the only 4 Color #1221 currently listed on HipComic!
Ride on over to the PONDEROSA and then gallop home with this gem for your collection!
