Item Description
. The son of boxer 'Battlin' Jack' Murdock, Matt Murdock grew up in the relative poverty of Hell's Kitchen with much reverence for his father, who constantly pressed him to study instead of playing with his friends. In turn, they taunted him with the facetious nickname DAREDEVIL since he always went back to studying and secretly training in his father's gym instead of doing things with them.Matt was blinded by toxic chemicals, but learned to hone his physical skills and other senses to the point where he was a fearsome force for good in his neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen, even after opening a law firm there.
In "The Kingpin Must Die!", here in issue #170 from 1981, Frank Miller, in the roles of both scripter and penciller (and aided by inker Klaus Janson) tells how KINGPIN, now retired from his life of crime and living in Japan, sends his wife, Vanessa Fisk, to New York to hire Foggy Nelson and Matt Murdock. KINGPIN's plan is to turn state's evidence against the East Coast crime bosses. Vanessa is captured by the mob so they can lure KINGPIN back to New York and kill him. But DAREDEVIL gets involved preventing this, and has a confrontation with BULLSEYE.
It's KINGPIN's first appearance in DAREDEVIL - where he becomes one of DD's main foes - after many appearances in THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN>
Frank Miller's artwork is stylish and evocative, and easily indicative of why he became the most popular DAREDEVIL artist of this era!
This is a great copy of the early 1980s DAREDEVIL, with a strong binding, supple pages and good color on its 44-year old pages! There are no tears, creases or pieces missing, just some normal toning . . and that leads us to grading this an 8.0 VF.
The Overstreet Guide feels $17 is appropriate for this issue at this grade -- but we feel $12 plus our L•O•W shipping is even MORE appropriate!
