Item DescriptionIn the Fall of 1970, over 52 years ago, Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith crafted a comic that is still hailed as one of the best series ever -- Marvel's CONAN the BARBARIAN. It sprang up on newsstand shelves as something entirely different from all the tights and capes next to it, and acclaim and enthusiasm built like an avalanche! Robert E. Howard had created CONAN in the 1930s, and there had even been a Mexican CONAN comic book in the 1950s, but it took Marvel, Thomas and Windsor-Smith to create a true sensation!
CONAN THE BARBARIAN #8 is set in the pseudo-historical Hyborian Age and gives us "The Keepers of the Crypt" - adapted by Roy Thomas and Barry Smith from themes in Robert E. Howard's pulp oeuvre.
CONAN has fled to Corinthia, but is being searched for, when all but one of the pursuing soldiers are killed by an avalanche seemingly triggered by CONAN. He heads deeper into Corinthia where he finds the abandoned city of Lanjau, guarded by a giant Gila Monster. CONAN manages to kill the beast, and begins looking around the city.
He is surprised by the reappearance of the lone soldier who escaped the avalanche, and they decide the treasure of the city is more important than any feud they might have, so they explore the city together. They find a vast treasure room stocked high with gold and jewels. As they start to divide the horde, six mummified guardians step from their resting places and attack. The two men flee, and the midday sun destroys the undead guardians when they leave the room.
But this starts a chain reaction that crumbles the entire city. CONAN makes it out, but the soldier falls beneath the debris of the collapse. CONAN makes his way to a village tavern and encounters Jenna, believing he has a whole bag of jewels to spend but is chagrined when he finds they have turned to dust. Pursued anew, CONAN and Jenna flee the village on horseback.
Tom Palmer and Tom Sutton ink Barry Windsor-Smith's pencils in this issue, and the look is more well-defined and clear than Smith's previous solo issues.
