Item Description
CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED was an American comic book series featuring adaptations of literary classics such as Moby Dick, Hamlet, and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Created by Albert Kanter, the series began publication by the Gilberton Company in 1941, and finished its first run in 1969, producing 169 issues. Here in issue #40 from August 1947 is the CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED version of three of EDGAR ALLAN POE's better-known mysteries, under the umbrella title "MYSTERIES by EDGAR ALLAN POE".
The first of the 3 stories in this big 60-page comic is 'THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM' illustrated by August Froehlich with period accuracy. A victim of the Spanish Inquisition is tortured in a dark room with a razor-sharp pendulum, a water-filled pit, rats, and other devices until liberated when Toledo, Spain falls to the French.
Next up is 'THE ADVENTURE OF HANS PFALL', illustrated by Henry Kiefer (who also illustrated the cover of this issue) and over 22 pages, tells the story of how Pfall kills his three creditors with an explosion then travels to the moon in a balloon of his own design, to become King of the Moon People!
The third adaptation is 'THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER', illustrated by Harley Griffiths, and tells of how Roderick Usher buries his catatonic twin sister Madeline then dies from fear and horror when she rises from her grave, just before the crumbling Usher mansion collapses upon them!
Also included are text pieces about Poe himself, The Cherokee Nation, George Washington, Robert Fulton, and Ludwig von Beethoven.
This copy has pretty obviously been enjoyed carefully over its 88-year life -- but is in very nice shape for its age. The binding is solid, and there are no tears or creases or pieces missing. Pages are supple, but the edges show some foxing, and there is a modest spine roll
We'll grade this at a 4.5 VG+, for which the Overstreet Price Guide gives a value of $156 for this first printing of issue #40 . . . but we'll make acquiring this comic more affordable for you at only $88 . . . accompanied by our 'CLASSIC' $2 shipping fee!
