Brenda Starr
Issue: 13 / YEAR: 1950's
Condition: VF
This is a complete golden age mystery/romance story, which begins with a spectacular splash! The story runs nine pages. It starts with a casino scene, and the tale just keeps going from there. Extremely nice art. Each page is suitable for framing, and the entire story would look great if hung in sequence throughout a home or office. Drawn in the usual golden age original art size of about 12" x 18" (on larger paper). Very nice originals, which are well-detailed with fine line and bold brush on art paper. The story is extremely well written, with the plot centered upon underworld gambler nick palatti, who is trying to win the heart of heiress dotty cranford. A charity casino is organized, and the ensuing shenanigans make this story quite fun to read. Brenda appears throughout, trying to help dotty's fiance ben lattimer keep the heart of dotty. We are virtually certain that this story was originally created for the (almost certainly) unpublished vol 2 #13 issue of brenda starr - that would have been published by superior in early 1950. We cannot find any record of that issue having been published, however, so three publishing options are possible. This story could be unpublished, it could have appeared in the charlton #13 from 1955, or it could possibly be from the four star vol 1 #13 from 1947. Regardless of where this story may have been published, it is a great piece of art and an historically significant golden age story. Condition: this complete original story still looks much like it did when it was new, over half a century ago. There is some "white-out" from the editor (mostly where panel borders were reduced), and a few overlays. Overall this original art still looks great, with off-white paper, and we grade it very fine . Scans: we are providing two images. One photo show the splash page, while the other shows the complete nine page story. Please note that both photos look somewhat darker and a lot fuzzier than the actual art. This story is historically important, looks great, and is suitable for museums as well as for collectors.
