THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD began publication in August-September of 1955. Originally an adventure series featuring several non-related vignettes per issue, the title eventually evolved into a team-up book, with BATMAN sharing the spotlight feature throughout most of its run.

But here in issue #34 from February of 1961, DC introduced the SILVER AGE reincarnation of HAWKMAN and HAWKGIRL , in what is essentially the first attempt to garner enough interest in the marriedf superheroes to give the winged one his own comic book (which actually came to pass a little over three years later, with the debut of HAWKMAN #1 in May of 1964).

In "Creature of a Thousand Shapes!", written by the legendary creator of the GOLDEN AGE HAWKMAN, DC stalwart Gardner Fox, and dynamically illustrated by another legend - Joe Kubert - we find Thanagarian police officers KATAR and SHAYERA HOL traveling to Earth in their space vessel in pursuit of a criminal named BYTH ROK. BYTH, having consumed a pill that grants him the ability to alter his shape, comes to Earth to commit bold new crimes simply for the thrill of the challenge.

Landing in Midway City, the Thanagarians introduce themselves to Midway's police commissioner George Emmett. Emmett is fascinated by the fact that they are alien police officers and uses his influence to provide them with Earth identities. KATAR and SHAYERA take the names CARTER and SHIERA HALL and become the new curators for the Midway City Museum

Elsewhere, BYTH uses his shape-shifting talents to commit a string of thefts. The HALLs are on the chase to capture him and when their paths cross there are several skirmishes, with BYTH changing form to different exotic animals to elude capture.

The 'HAWKs' eventually battle BYTH after he transforms into a THANAGARIAN reptile beast and overcome and arrest him! ( but in the coming years, he'll be back . . .)

This 64-year-old copy of THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #42 is in 2.0 GD condition, which one look at the front cover and its smudged bottom edge and rolled & injured spine will explain! The pages are somewhat limp, and there are a few rough edges, and the spine has apparently been restapled to hold it the detached cover in place ➡️ but nothing mars the great art inside!

The Overstreet Price Guide values this issue in 2.0 GD condition at $224 (!!!), obviously for the first Silver Age appearance of HAWKMAN and HAWKGIRL . . . but we're offering it for just $88 (by far, the best bargain of the three B&B #34 listings here on HipComic) . . with our always-L•O•W shipping!
