Jeff Smith’s BONE burst upon the comic scene in 1991 and was immediately embraced as a unique and universally-appealing epic fantasy. It told the tale of the three BONE cousins - Fone, Phony and Smiley - as they escape a scandal in Boneville and find themselves in a vaguely medieval valley, where they get to know the inhabitants and share their adventures, as well as the dangers and threats to their peaceful existence.

Done in Smith’s beautifully cartoony pen and brush style, the black and white comic from Cartoon Books ran for a pre-planned 55 issues and said farewell in 2004. Over the course of its existence, it won ten Eisner Awards and eleven Harvey Awards!

Here is the first printing of issue #2, taking place a few months after the end of issue #1, wherein Bone is living in the valley during winter, with the help of his friends from the forrest. In this issue, while babysitting Miz Possum's children, Bone is chased by the Stupid Stupid Rat Creatures. Calamity ensues. But he is saved by the Dragon and finally finds Thorn.

There is a lot more action in this issue, and it moves along more quickly than issue #1 without sacrificing its humor for excitement. Every panel is a delight!
