Item Description
This is the fifth of 7 BEANY AND CECIL issues under the Dell Four Color banner. All pages but the front cover of this issue came from the drawing board of noted Disney/Warner Bros. animator Jack Bradbury, who switched to comic book illustration when he was 30 years old, and never looked back!Jack Bradbury was personally selected by BEANY AND CECIL creator Bob Clampett to be the first cartoonist to adapt his puppet characters from the wildly popular daily TV show "TIME FOR BEANY" to the comic book medium, and Jack illustrated all 7 BEANY AND CECIL issues in the first 1953 - 1955 run of this title.
This issue contains the 22-page story, "Beany and the Miner Bird", in which Professor X reconstructs a map to the buried treasure of 17th Century pirate Captain Kidder. The treasure is buried on the Pacific island of Pogo Pogo. On the way there, the Leakin' Lena is diverted by Dishonest John to cross the International Date Line in the mysterious waters of Latitude Q and is thrown back into time into the 17th Century. There BEANY AND CECIL meet Captain Kidder, who trades a Miner Bird (who can spot gold mines) for BEANY's calendar watch. But they get back to the present, in possession of Kidder's treasure!
You also get "The Gold Cup Race" 10-page story. Cap'n Huffenpuff enters the Leakin' Lena in the annual boat race to Holiday Island. Professor X has invented jet pills to make the gasoline in the boat's tank 1,000 times more powerful than normal. Dishonest John switches the jet pills for aspirin then buys a rickety boat to use in the race.
This book is in 5.0 VG/FN condition, obviously read and enjoyed but with a few defects - stress lines, dimples and a few small missing pieces from the cover. But the interior is intact, relatively toning-free for its 69 years - and a lot of fun to read if you remember these characters!
Overstreet values this issue in 2.5 GD+ condition at $21 . . . but we want you to enjoy it too, so we say $10.
