Item Description
Although he had been plotting AMAZING SPIDER-MAN issues nearly from the start of its run, this is just the fourth issue in which STEVE DITKO gets actual credit for plotting the story! So he was in charge, and can't really be faulted for having Peter Parker graduate from High School in this issue, when , if continuity timelines were followed, he would have been only 15 years old!A pretty young age to be battling and besting a villain with the powers of MOLTEN MAN!!
In "The Menace of the Molten Man!", the school year comes to a close, and Peter Parker is getting the cold shoulder from Liz Allan.Graduation day is coming soon, so Peter is let out of school early and he pays a visit to troubled inventor Spencer Smythe. Even though Smythe's robot grabs Peter, he talks his way out of it andnotices a commotion between Smythe and Mark Raxton over a liquid metal alloy. A greedy and impatient Raxton intends to sell it but Smythe fights back , only to be knocked down. The jar of liquid metal alloy spills onto Raxton, who is horrified when his skin absorbs it!
Raxton leaves for a hospital but soon realizes his great strength and decides on a life of crime!SPIDER-MAN confronts Raxton and begins to battle him, taking extremely hard blows due to Raxton’s new body of metal. SPIDER-MAN knocks the lights out, and in the dark ties up Raxton’s hands and feet with super-thick webbing and leaves him for the police.Peter Parker rushes to attend his graduation and afterward manages to catch up with Liz Allan. Liz professes her feelings to Peter and says she felt she was seen as a ditzy blonde and that she never had a chance with Betty or Mary Jane around. Liz says it’s time for that part of her to graduate and leaves before Peter can say a thing.
This is a nice solid copy of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #28, with a strong binding, supple pages and bright color. The pages have very little toning for a 54-year-old comic, and no foxing. Although there is handwriting on the title page, a bent corner, and a mildly rough-edged back cover, we confidently grade this copy a 6.0 FN, for which Overstreet assigns a value of $465!! We think $325 is much more reasonable! (Overstreet states that this issue is particularly hard to find in the better conditions!)
And our FREE SHIPPING is another great reason to take this Spidey home!
