Perhaps the longest-running 'Secret Identity Mystery' in the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN title involved the character first unveiled in costume here in issue #238 - THE HOBGOBLIN! It would be another FIVE YEARS, and after many red-herring false unmaskings, that the diabolical villain was truly Identitfied!

And it all started here in the story 'Shadow of Evils Past!', written by Roger Stern and Illustrated by the fan-favorite John Romita Jr. and inked by his dad, John Romita Sr.! Amid wild action taking place across diverse settings, running from the New York Tax Authority offices, to a wild car chase, to the offices of the Daily Bugle, to Aunt May's home, to dark sewer tunnels under Manhattan and a former super-villain's hidden lair, PETER PARKER finds himself confronting the past life of his arch enemy THE GREEN GOBLIN!

But some one else - a dark-shrouded and unidentified stranger makes the GREEN GOBLIN's cache of weapons and accoutrements his own . . . and becomes the mysterious HOBGOBLIN!

•••••••• There is a bit of mystery also about the production of this issue -- all copies were originally stated to contain an insert from LAKESIDE TATTOOZ with an array of temporary skin tattoos (back in the '8os when these were all the rage for a while!). But later, issues appeared WITHOUT the tattoos, giving rise to a two-tiered valuation in The Overstreet Price Guide. Don't buy the much-higher priced issues claiming to have the tattoos unless there is visual proof! ••••••• (see our last image)
