Possibly the most popular comic book issue of 1973, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #121 sent shockwaves through Marvel Fandom. The death of Gwen Stacy was reported in mainstream media, and this issue was voted by fans as #6 in the "100 Greatest Marvel Stories" poll of 1999.

Here in "The Night Gwen Stacy Died!", the story begins with a continuation of Harry Osborn's drug-addiction storyline, a sobering and eye-opening tale for the times. Harry is raving and bedridden after once again taking LSD and when his father, Norman, finds his son's friends gathering around in support, he throws them out of the Osborn home. Cracking under the pressure of his damaged son and failing business, Norman Osborn regains his memory of being the GREEN GOBLIN and the secret identity of his deadliest foe.

Trying to get to SPIDER-MAN where it will cause the most hurt, the GOBLIN captures Peter Parker's girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, and brings her to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge (misdescribed in the story as the George Washingtom Bridge, but later corrected in subsequent printings!). During the ensuing fight between SPIDER-MAN and the GOBLIN, Gwen falls from the bridge, and when SPIDER-MAN tries to catch her with his web line, her neck snaps.
