As JACK KIRBY's time at DC began to wind down, he was still coming up with so many new ideas and characters that he was hard to keep up with! 1ST ISSUE SPECIAL was created as an anthology comic featuring a different character each issueand was the perfect playground for Kirby to try out his percolating story ideas!. It was a try-out comic and each character was being given a chance to see how well they sold before possibly gaining their own series. But the only two series that were started from 1st ISSUE SPECIAL were WARLORD and the revival of NEW GODS.

Here, in "ATLAS the Great!", the Lizard King Hyssa raids a small Mediterranean village, enslaving and killing dozens of people. One youth named ATLAS survives the attack, but his family is not quite so lucky. He comes under the care of a man named CHAGRA who recognizes that ATLAS is from the Crystal Mountain. He protects ATLAS from Hyssa's war party and after they leave, ATLAS returns to his home community to find it burned to the ground. Recovering a shard from the Crystal Mountain, he swears revenge against King Hyssa.

Years pass, and ATLAS grows into a powerful man gifted with Herculean strength and stamina. CHAGRA remains by his side and promises that they will find the beast responsible for killing his people.

ATLAS and CHAGRA reach the Lizard Kingdom where he exhibits more great feats of strength. He wins in a challenge against a man named Kargin and finds himself at odds with one of the King's nobles, but survives his villainous attack and the two continue on their quest.

Pure Kirby excitement, with the nice inking of D. Bruce Berry! There's also a 1-page text feature on the background of Kirby's ATLAS creation!

This is a great-looking copy of one of the lesser known projects of Kirby's while at DC. The binding is strong, the pages are supple and bright, there are no splits, tears, separations, or pieces missing - a terrific part of any Kirby collection!
