Following the Hulk's poisoning and defeat of the Abomination, but collapses as the Government arrives to clean up the mess left by the two monster's battle. However after several hours he awakens and easily escapes, while shortly after Doc Sampson arrives to the scene. The Hulk then travels to Phoenix where he interrupts a speech by Reed Richards, leading to his battling with the now human Ben Grimm and Sharon Ventura who continually ignore his claims to not be there for a fight. While back at the research facility Sterns is being questioned by Doc Sampson who believes he knew that Bancroft was Banner, while in Phoenix Hulk defeats Sharon but spares her and Invisible Woman to prove he isn't here for a fight. However the poison flares up bringing him to his knees where he is knocked out by Sharon, while Reed deduces something is wrong and his intention to help him. He's then taken to a local clinic where it's learned he's suffered multiple heart attacks since his being poisoned, he then leaves the clinic meeting up with Ben at a local bar. They then begin talking about the past battles with Ben apologizing for assuming the Hulk was the Wrecker the very first time they met before he returns to the clinic. Reed then informs him that the virus is constantly mutating preventing his healing factor from destroying it, and once he returns to being Bruce Banner he will die.

Volume Description
Continued from Tales to Astonish Vol.1 which was originally one of several anthology comics published by Marvel in the 1960's featuring one-shot monsters in their own tales. Over the years the series began to focus more upon some of the anti-heroes still famous to this day such as the Sub-Mariner and The Incredible Hulk. That is why, after 101 issues, that series changed its name to The Incredible Hulk with issue #102. Under this new name the series lasted thirty more years until it finally concluded with issue #474. The series was then revamped with a new number one and a new title, simply called Hulk (1998).
Although it started out as Tales to Astonish, this is actually the second volume to be entitled "The Incredible Hulk", the first, The Incredible Hulk (1962), having begun publication six years earlier, although it only lasted six issues.
