Issue Description
The climax to the last year’s worth of Spider-man stories starts with a bang as questions are answered and Spidey’s new world is rocked to its core.
Who's the person terrorizing people as Menace? Who's behind the Spider-Tracer Killings? Who's going to be the Mayor of New York City? After more than 365 (Brand New) Days, Marc Guggenheim and John Romita Jr. have all the answers in the first chapter of "Character Assassination" -- a story over a year in the making!
As the news reports that the Mayoral race between Crowne and Hollister is close, Shocker and Boomerang talk about voting and make their way to the Bookie's place to collect some winnings. When they arrive, they find him dead. The police then get an anonymous call and find a spider-tracer on his body.
Spider-Man is being chased and shot at by a police helicopter. Shot in the arm, he crashes through an office window. Carlie Cooper visits her coworker's CSI lab asking if he's figured out how to trace the Spider-Tracers. He's managed to come up with a device that can isolate the unique frequency and locate the signal. Checking where the strongest signal is coming from, Carlie is concerned. Spider-Man is now fighting Menace. He's taking a beating when Menace finally rips off his mask to reveal Harry Osborn. It turns out Spidey was hallucinating from loss of blood.
J. Jonah Jameson is working out at the gym punching a bag with Spider-Man's picture. Robbie asks if it's good for his health but it's Jonah's only way to deal with all his loss. Crowne and Hollister get the latest poll results and prepare their next move. Harry rented all of Ellis Island as he and Lily climb the Statue of Liberty. At the top, he proposes to her.
Spider-Man makes it to his apartment but has to wait until his roommate Vin leaves. He needs to shower off all the blood on him. Carlie enters their apartment with their spare key. She thinks the her friend must be tricking her by having the device point her to their apartment. Peter manages to grab his costume off the floor and yells out to Carlie that he's naked. She's fine with him being occupied and tracks the signal to Vin's room. Under his bed, she finds a baggie full of Spider-Tracers.

Volume Description
After the success of Amazing Fantasy #15 (Aug. 1962) a few months later the same creative team came back to start an ongoing series focusing on the character the two of them created.
The book's run continued until issue number 441 (Nov. 1998) when Marvel relaunched the title as Amazing Spider-Man Volume 2 with a new number 1 in January 1999. After issue #30 (#471) Marvel used a dual numbering system, yet the indicia still stated The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 2. On the title's 40th anniversary the numbering was reverted to go from issue 58 to issue 500 (Dec. 2003) as The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1.
This volume ends with #700 and is picked up by the Marvel Now! revolution volume Superior Spider-Man.
