Issue Description
In a near tussle to the death, Will O’ the Wisp fights Spidey for an envelope he believes contains sensitive information. J. Jonah Jameson takes out his Spider-Slayer robot for another round, but soon realizes he is not equipped for battle. All is not as it seems with Spidey’s new villain. Will Will O’ the Wisp find the will to maintain his humanity?
Murder on the Wind!At the end of the previous issue, Spider-Man was rendered immobile thanks to Will-O'-The-Wisp, with an envelope which contains some sort of evidence against him in his hands, which he stole from J. Jonah Jameson. The Spider-Slayer has also just appeared, ready to stop Spider-Man. The Slayer shoots a beam of light at Will-O'-The-Wisp, which somehow breaks hold of Will-O'-The Wisp's hold on Spider-Man. Spider-Man then hides the envelope he stole from Jonah's office, before someone manages to take it off him. Will-O'-The-Wisp is then about to fight the Spider-Slayer, when his head starts burning and he disappears. Spider-Man then manages to trick J. Jonah Jameson into driving the Spider-Slayer into a large statue, which falls on the Slayer, trapping it.
Spider-Man then heads home, and checks out the envelope to see what "evidence" is in it. He's shocked to see that it contains photos of him disposing of his clone, (which occurred Amazing Spider-Man #151), who looks exactly like Peter Parker. He remembers that he had thought he sensed someone watching him, but doesn't know what he can do now.
Meanwhile, Will-O'-the-Wisp has headed to his employer, who apparently caused the burning sensation in his head. His employer is revealed to be Doctor Jonas Harrow, who's had some of his other agents stopped by Spider-Man. Harrow tells Will-O'-The-Wisp that he has to kill Spider-Man for him, and Will-O'-The-Wisp reluctantly agrees, although he's not happy about it.
Peter Parker is then seen with some photos in his darkroom, thinking that it's the best plan he has. After a visit from Mary Jane, he changes to Spider-Man and heads over to the Daily Bugle, and replaces Jonah's envelope where he found it. As he leaves, he wonders whether Jonah thought that he'd murdered Peter Parker, when Spider-Man is confronted by Will-O'-the-Wisp! The two then fight for a while, and when the fight breaks down to the street, Will-O'-The-Wisp uses his hypnotism to control a group of people, so that they fight Spider-Man for him. However, Spider-Man convinces Will-O'-The-Wisp not to involve innocents in their battle, and the two then continue fighting around Times Square.
Will-O'-The-Wisp then starts charging Spider-Man's body with electricity, by touching Spider-Man with one hand and an electric sign with the other. As he's being shocked, Spider-Man tells Will-O'-The-Wisp that if he kills him, he'll become a murderer, and lose his humanity. Will-O'-The-Wisp says that he has no choice, but Spider-Man points out that there's always a choice. Will-O'-The-Wisp then flies down to the street, where Jonas Harrow is hidden among the civilians, watching them fight, although as he flies down, Harrow activates a device which causes Will-O'-The Wisp to break apart and disintegrate. Spider-Man then wonders who he was going to attack, since he doesn't think there's anyone in the crowd who could pose a threat to him.

Volume Description
After the success of Amazing Fantasy #15 (Aug. 1962) a few months later the same creative team came back to start an ongoing series focusing on the character the two of them created.
The book's run continued until issue number 441 (Nov. 1998) when Marvel relaunched the title as Amazing Spider-Man Volume 2 with a new number 1 in January 1999. After issue #30 (#471) Marvel used a dual numbering system, yet the indicia still stated The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 2. On the title's 40th anniversary the numbering was reverted to go from issue 58 to issue 500 (Dec. 2003) as The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1.
This volume ends with #700 and is picked up by the Marvel Now! revolution volume Superior Spider-Man.
