Of course, Zetsubou-sensei is quick to point out that rites of passage don’t end with childhood. There are many different rites of passage in the world. For instance, a manga assistant’s rite of passage is spilling coffee on the storyboards for the first time. And we mustn’t forget the important rite of passage that any true Zetsubou fan must undergo. What is it, you ask? Why, buying a copy of Sayonara, Zetsubou-sensei volume 8, of course!

Originally published in Japan as Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei (literally meaning 'Good-bye, Mr Despair). The title seems to pay homage to Good-bye, Mr Chips the 1934 novel about a loved & respected teacher. Del Rey manga added the subtitle The Power of Negative Thinking to they could preserve the original Japanese title, emphasise the pessimistic view of the lead character (Itoshiki Sensei), and to play on the title of the 1952 self-help book, the Power of Positive Thinking.
