What if the CEO of a company passes off the baton to you right as the company goes bankrupt? Or what if a movie director passes off the baton to you right after the main actor quits? Originally published in Japan as Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei (literally meaning 'Good-bye, Mr Despair). The title seems to pay homage to Good-bye, Mr Chips the 1934 novel about a loved & respected teacher. Del Rey manga added the subtitle The Power of Negative Thinking to they could preserve the original Japanese title, emphasise the pessimistic view of the lead character (Itoshiki Sensei), and to play on the title of the 1952 self-help book, the Power of Positive Thinking.
