Overview

"Officer Down," Part 5. Oracle and Nightwing take the investigation into a new direction, but finding the answers may unleash in these heroes a darker aspect of themselves then they've ever faced before. When the truth behind Gordon's assailant is revealed, Oracle ponders taking justice into her own hands. Meanwhile Alfred has a fateful confrontation with Batman which could tear their relationship to shreds.

SpoilersNightwing brings Oracle the gun that was used to shoot her father so that she can get to work on tracing it. She discovers that the gun was part of a stash held by the Lucky Hand Traid, which was confiscated some time ago - but this particular firearm never made it to evidence control. She and Nightwing then discover that Officers Rich and Lowell were in charge of the bust; Oracle remembers Lowell as a loyal cop; Rich, however, is new to the force. After some further detective work, she discovers that Officer Rich was previously known as Jordan Reynolds, a former convict who turned states evidence and was given a new identity through witness protection. The man who had orignally arrested him: Detective James Gordon...

At the hospital, Alfred berates his master for doing so little when he is so sorely needed: he is neither assisting with James Gordon's recovery nor helping in the hunt for the man that shot him. When Batman ignores him, Alfred leaves, probably forever. Soon, Barbara receives the news that her father has woken up, while Nightwing delivers the gun to Harvey Bullock along with what has been learnt about the shooting.

Following his solo starring roles in Nightwing: Alfred's Return and the September Nightwing 1995 mini-series launched after Grayson's turn under the Batman cowl in Batman: Prodigal, Dick Grayson was rewarded for years of heroic service with his own ongoing series, written by Chuck Dixon and with art by Scott McDaniel, coming off the success of Dixon's Robin (1993) series.

Setting up camp in Bludhaven, a city close to his Gotham City home and twice as corrupt, Nightwing quickly acquired quite a rogues gallery. From underworld boss Blockbuster to the acrobatic Lady Vic to the twisted former cop Torque, Nightwing battled his way to respect in his new town, and the fans took notice.

A hit from the start, Nightwing lasted 153 regular issues, a #1000000 issue, 2 annuals and a special #0.5 issue from Wizard magazine.

As the series came to an end in 2009 with the Death of Bruce Wayne story line running throughout the Bat-family titles, Dick Grayson went on to star as Batman in Batman, Detective Comics, Batman & Robin among others.
