The story opens with John Carter in chains, a prisoner of Stara Kan. Above his prison cell, Dejah Thoris, also a prisoner, listens to Stara Kan tell of his defeat at the hands of John Carter, a year earlier in the war with the Zodangan army. Seeking revenge, Stara Kan unleashes a wild banth (resembling a six-legged lion) to devour John Carter. Before he can battle the sinister Stara Kan, Carter must defeat the banth and free his princess.

Volume Description
John Carter, Warlord of Mars was a 1977-1979 Marvel series loosely based upon the Barsoom series of novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. This 28 issue series takes place during chapter 27 of Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel A Princess of Mars. The series was well received and won the 1978 "Favourite New Title Eagle Award" (a British comics award based on the voting of fans).
The series also had an John Carter Warlord of Mars Annual series that accompanied the monthly series.
