Mark Moonrider resists the temptation of the Dark. Mark Moonrider succumbs to the temptation of the Dark. Donald F. Bergman, a tortured author, is drawn into the Dark's web. Beautiful Dreamer is tempted by the Dark when, once again, it manifests as her lost child. The Dark "child" coalesces into the form of Mark Moonrider, Beautiful Dreamer's first love. Big Bear disrupts the Dark's seduction of Beautiful Dreamer.
The real Mark Moonrider reveals himself, and attacks Beautiful Dreamer, and Big Bear. At first they turn to flee, rather than combat their former friend. When Beautiful Dreamer, however, is stuck unconscious, by flying debris, Big Bear turns to confront Mark Moonrider. An epic battle ensues, fought on both physical and psychological fronts. Ultimately, Big Bear stays the killing blow, allowing Mark Moonrider the opportunity to defeat him
. The Dark's influence on Bergman places stress on his marriage. The Dark takes full possession of Bergman. Before Mark Moonrider can slay Big Bear, he is attacked by Vykin, The Black, backed up by Serifan, and Maya. Mark Moonrider summons the human army of the Dark. Serifan, and Vykin, The Black, are overwhelmed by the Dark's forces. Maya is forced to retreat. The Dark, led by Mark Moonrider, have defeated the Forever People.
