Issue Description

Continued from last issue, Anthro and his family are escaping the valley of Katara, but now via raft. After navigating a treacherous waterfall, Anthro goes overboard. The raft capsizes, but Ne-Ahn, Emba, Lart, and Emba’s mother make it to shore. Ne-Ahn crafts a spear, and goes searching for Anthro, as the other three create a campfire.
 
Anthro awakes washed ashore, in the midst of wild bears. Anthro escapes the bears by climbing up a rock face. While climbing, he finds a cave, with a smell of smoke from inside. Believing the cave to be inhabited by man, he enters the cave with a makeshift club. There, he finds what he thinks are dancing bears, but in actuality are cavemen with bear pelts dancing to the drums. Anthro attacked one, but then fled, allowing the rest to give chase. The tribe knocks him out, and, according to tribe law, must die for seeing their sacred ritual. Anthro awakens, and thinks that the man about to kill him is his father. He calls out, and the man stops.
 
The man realizes that Anthro is speaking in their tongue, the tongue of the Bear Tribe. When Anthro tells him that he is Anthro, son of Ne-Ahn, the man is overjoyed. The man reveals himself to be Do-Ahn, the younger brother to Ne-Ahn. Ne-Ahn has been lost for seventeen seasons. Do-Ahn accepts Anthro as one of the tribe, and tells the story how his father cast Ne-Ahn out after his marriage to Anthro’s mother. However, since then, Do-Ahn now rules the tribe, and would welcome his brother back. Anthro meets the rest of the tribe, including a young woman named Nima, who gives him a gift. Anthro and Do-Ahn go out in search of the rest of the lost family.
 
Back at their makeshift camp, Anthro’s family searches for food. Lart does spearfishing, but is interrupted by a bear. Lart scrambles to escape the bear, but even with his wooden crutch he is unable to escape. Just as the bear attacks, Ne-Ahn comes to the rescue, smashing the bear with a boulder. Back at the camp, Emba screams as another bear enters the camp, but just as Ne-Ahn attacks, the bear reveals himself to be Anthro. Anthro and Do-Ahn find the camp, and Ne-Ahn experiences a joyous reunion with his long-lost brother.
 
As the family return to camp, the camp’s guards say that they have captured a woman on horseback. Instantly thinking it is Embra, Anthro rushes off to the captive. However, the captive is actually Ita, Embra’s older and less attractive sister. Ita reveals that the Horse Tribe have been following Anthro’s trail, and that Chief Tugg and Embra are also here. Anthro hops on Ita’s horse and is off to find Embra.

Volume Description

After his debut in Showcase #74, Anthro gets his own ongoing series. Published in 1968, the bulk of the creative work of the series was handled by Anthro creator Howie Post. Post handled the writing, pencilling and inking of the series, while Joe Orlando served as the editor. Designed as an ongoing series, Anthro was canceled at issue #6, after an cost increase drove many of DC Comics' books from a 12 cents cover to a 15 cents cover. This resulted in a cliffhanger ending for issue 6 revolving around Anthro's fate with his love Embra. Anthro and his family would not be seen again until the Crisis on Infinite Earths, with the exception of a cameo for the celebratory Showcase #100.
