OverviewAt the height of comics' Silver Age, artist Steve Ditko was winning praise for his spectacular work on Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man and Dr. Strange. At the same time, Ditko was also creating powerful tales of another hero: Captain Atom, published by Charlton Comics as part of its "Action Hero" line. DC's first archive of Charlton material gathers some of Ditko's greatest Captain Atom adventures, originally published from 1960-1966. The paperback includes a forward written by Blake Bell and short biographies of Steve Ditko, Joe Gill, David A. Kaler and Rocke Mastroserio.

Space Adventures #33Introducing Captain Atom
Atlas was an experimental rocket that was launched into space with Military Scientist Allen Adam accidentally on board. It was was set to detonated 300 miles above the earth. At the instant of fission Allen was atomized at the atomic structure. It was then that his body was vaporized. Miraculously Allen reforms his own body and finds that he has harnessed the very power of the atom from within. He ends up donning a Diulustel Shielding Suit designed to protect ordinary humans from his potential radiation.

Igor Kriss is a Russian Astronaut who was supposed to be the first person in space. When launched into space however he suffered an accident rendering him unconscious. Captain Atom discovered him and saves his life with 1000 units of space vaccine. Once realizing Captain Atom is the first man in space he subsequently realizes he is the second and afterwords he lets his country know live on TV, much to the chagrin of his leaders.

Billy Goslin the son of Gunner Goslin, Allen Adam's best friend has the power to separate himself while he is sleeping into two persons. One stays asleep while the other is awake. In these incidents he plays with a giant alien bird called Loga that flies in space. It is not known if it is the bird that gives him the power or does it come from Billy himself. At first no one believes Billy when they tells them about his adventures until one day Billy doesn't wake up. For two days he sleeps until Gunner brings his friend Allen over to help his son. Allen figures out that Billy's story must be true. As such go goes into space to find him as Captain Atom. Billy had talked about the dark side of the moon in great detail giving Captain Atom a place to start. Captain Atom ends up finding Billy and convinces Billy not to leave home for so long.
Space Adventures #36The Wreck Of X-44
Captain Allen Adam is test piloting the new X-44 when it is launched into space and explodes. As it turns out the ship was sabotaged by Gerald Mudge. Luckily, Captain Adam is Captain Atom and he is able to survive the crash, rebuild the ship take it back to Earth and capture Mudge.
Captain Atom On Planet X
Planet X was created by the United State Air Force in 1960. It is a satellite that orbits the earth with all known weather equipment, Geiger counters and, a missile guidance system. It also takes highly magnified television pictures of any potential military threat around the world. As a spy satellite it drew the attention of enemy nations and was a attacked several times with missiles but Captain Atom deflected all the attacks. As none of the nations knew how their missiles were destroyed it was thought that the satellite had defense systems. This kept the satellite safe from enemy attacks.
