Aesops Modern Fables (Superman) -- 2. The Baseball Barrage (Hayfoot Henry) -- 3. Blunderbuss Broty (Vigilante) -- 4. Chief Hot Foot -- 5. Money Talks -- 6. Frame Up in Fur (Congo Bill) -- 7. The Sting of Death (Zatara) Superman: Thief Johnny Aesop breaks out of jail and plans a series of crimes based on the morals from Aesop's fables. Before each crime, he sends a cryptic message to the Planet. His first crime involves rigging a boat race so the boat he bets on will win, but Superman manages to foil the plot and capture three of Aesop's men. For his second crime, he steals a priceless objet d'art from a mansion. As Superman chases after him, he covers his escape with sleeping gas causing traffic chaos, which Superman has to clear up allowing Aesop's escape. For his next crime, he kidnaps Lois and holds her hostage to prevent Superman interfering. Aesop's gang stage a robbery in a night club, but Superman foils this one as well, as gets the thugs to tell him where Lois is being held.
As Superman breaks into Aesop's hideout, Aesop threatens to shoot Lois unless Superman backs off, but then Aesop gets another in a series of headaches that have plagued him for several years.
Superman discovers that the headaches are caused by a bone chip pressing into his brain, and massages Aesop's head to remove the pressure. Aesop then returns to his old self, where he was a law-abiding citizen. Although he is still prepared to pay for his crimes, Superman convinces the judge to release him into Superman's custody.

Volume Description
In the early days of comics books, it was not the convention to name comics after specific characters. Rather comics bore generic names such as this one. Although this series featured Superman throughout, it thus bore this name, one which it has become famous for (and the name was kept after the launch of The New 52.) It was the fourth DC Comics title, and the first new one produced after Detective Comics spread beyond the one title (this was after it purchased More Fun Comics and New Adventure Comics.)
Starring: Lex Luthor (starting #890) until #900.
Second Feature: Captain Atom (#879-#889), Superboy (#892), Jimmy Olsen (#893-#896)
